Cold is the most common disorder affecting dosha humans. Everyone has suffered from common cold at some point in their lives. Its symptoms are too well known. In Ayurveda, this very common disease is known as Pratishyaya.
All three doshas are responsible for the occurrence of colds. Common cold Vata dosha have dry coughs, little mucus discharge, hoarse voice, headache and runny nose. People with pitta dosha which includes hay fever, sore throat, yellowish nasal discharge and blockage of nasal continuous. People with Kapha dosha colds have thick mucus discharge from dull headache and heaviness of the head.
(1) Useful Herbs in the treatment of common cold
– Bishop's Weed (Trachyspermum AMMI) Bishop's cons bad Herb has the power to open clogged nasal passages. Its seeds are tied in a cloth and inhaled directly to clear congestion. It is very effective in treating nasal obstruction in children.
– Cassia (Cassis fistula) Cassia roots are effective in treating cold. The roots are burned and the smoke is inhaled them. The accumulation of mucus increases after such treatment, but in time it will completely stop.
– Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) Cinnamon is boiled in a glass of water with a pinch of pepper and honey. This reduces the throat problems and also precludes the cold to become chronic, or developing into something serious like pneumonia or influenza.
– Seeds of cumin (Cuminum cyminum) Cumin seeds are antiseptic. So they have beneficial effects if the cold is accompanied by fever. It is also useful in the treatment of throat irritation.
– Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Ginger extract fired several times a day is an excellent remedy for treating coughs that accompany colds. Ginger tea is also very effective to treat colds.
– Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) Chewing a few leaves of Tulsi (holy basil) will address issues throat. An extract of the leaves boiled in water can be used as a drink for the same benefits.
– Onion (Allium cepa) Onion has the power to liquefy mucus. This makes the sticky mucus that flows and is discharged from the nose.
(2) dietary treatments for colds
– Common cold patients are typically advised to fast for one day so that the toxins out of body wash. While patients can have hot vegetable soups or steamed vegetables with little or no spices in them. Foods that are difficult to digest, such as cheese, yogurt, milk, spicy and fatty foods and sweets should be avoided.
– Hot foods are recommended when you have a cold. Hot chicken soup is a traditional remedy for colds known.
(3) The Ayurvedic treatment for colds
– Bhringasava is Ayurveda prescribes the remedy against the common cold. This is usually prescribed in quantities of 15 ml three times daily for seven days.
— Nasal drops called Anutaila are also prescribed by many Ayurvedic physicians. Other common drugs are vati Vyoshaadi, Kantara Arya Ava Lehya, Tribhuvan Keerti, etc. These preparations must be taken in time to prevent the cold turn into flu.
– Trikatu powder is suggested to be taken with honey. This reduces inflammation of the airways. Shadbindu Taila can be used as nasal drops. This should be used twice a day as long as the cold symptoms are felt.
(4) Home Medications
– Take a pinch of salt. Put few drops of mustard oil in it and stir until the oil loses its fluidity. DAB mixture on the nose, neck and chest. It will Tingle a little, but the relief will be.
– Mix some jaggery and black pepper together. Boil in the water. Sip as quickly when is hot like you do with tea.
– Squeeze the juice of two lemons into a glass of water. Put the sugar to sweeten the mixture. This must be taken at bedtime to seek relief from nasal catarrh.
– One more remedy is to mix the nutmeg and opium with cow's milk into a paste. This must be applied on the nose and forehead while going to bed.
– Combine black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom and the seeds of Nigella sativa (Krishna Jeeraka), and use it as snuff to help open more congested nasal passages.
– Before bedtime, apply oil eucalyptus on the forehead, chest and nose at night. Then, wrap yourself in a warm blanket and go sleep. You'll be sweating profusely in the night, but happen. In the morning, the cold will disappear, and any fever if present.
– It is not advisable stay in a cramped room when you have a cold. Open windows and let the air but do not do that, if the outside temperature is cold. Take a little walk in the fresh air and get enough rest.
Another point to note is that the cold is contagious. Therefore, if you hay, you should take precautions because it does not on others. Do not go near infants and children as they are most vulnerable to cold draw. Also use a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Keep your utensils separate.
