Major depression is different from depression, although the terms are often used as synonyms. Major depression is a debilitating disease that affects and affects an individual work of family life, school life, sleeping and eating habits and overall health. Women are at greater risk for major depression compared to men, but suicide is more common among men. Major depression is more likely to occur between age 30 to 40 years with a peak later, between 50 to 60 years. There are, however, no laboratory test for depression. Doctors and psychologists do often refer laboratory tests to assess whether the symptoms are not the result of other diseases.

What happens inside body to achieve major depression? Scientists believe that norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine are three neurotransmitters (chemical messengers that transmit electrical signals between brain cells), and they are involved in major depression. Occurs when a chemical imbalance in these neurotransmitters, major depression is the result. Anti-depressants work by stabilizing the chemical balance. Anti-depressants either increase the availability of neurotransmitters or change the level of sensitivity of receptors for them.
The nature of inheritance of major depression was deemed sufficient determination and prediction factors. An individual who has a family history of major depression is at a higher risk develop major depression than those without major depression in the family. This does not mean that every person with a family history major depression will develop the disease, but for these people, there may be a genetic vulnerability.
